Courthouse Renovation Project
On Monday, Aug. 5, 2019 the Washington County Board of Supervisors voted in favor of a motion to enter into a purchase option for the former Kmart building as a potential location to host the county’s court functions. The board filed a petition in the Washington County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 to let voters decide whether the county may relocate all operations in its courthouse from 189 East Main Street in the town of Abingdon, Virginia, to 300 Towne Centre Drive in the town of Abingdon, Virginia.
The referendum was held concurrently with the general election on November 5, 2019 and gave voters an opportunity to vote “Yes” or “No” on the following: “Shall the Courthouse be removed to 300 Towne Centre Drive, and shall the Board of Supervisors be permitted to spend $30,000,000.00 for purchase and renovation expenses therefor?”
A final vote of 5,271 in favor of the move and 12,075 against, resulted in a defeated referendum.
The County is continuing to work to alleviate the ongoing challenges of the historic 150 year old courthouse.
