Office of Commonwealth's Attorney

Under Virginia law, the Commonwealth’s Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of felonies which occur in Washington County. Additionally, the Commonwealth’s Attorney has elected to provide our citizens and our Courts additional services by also prosecuting misdemeanors occurring in Washington County. The Commonwealth’s Attorney is elected at-large for a four year term and presently employs a staff of sixteen, including seven Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorneys.

It is the policy of the Office of Commonwealth’s Attorney to aggressively prosecute criminal offenses and to seek sentences that ensure the public safety. The Commonwealth’s Attorney and his assistants seek fair and equitable treatment for victims and witnesses, including restitution in appropriate cases.

Immediately contact the appropriate law enforcement agency. Preserve any evidence for collection by the responding deputies or officers and give them the names of all witnesses. No. The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney has jurisdiction only in criminal cases, that is, cases in which the defendant potentially could receive a punishment such as imprisonment or a fine. We do, however, seek restitution where appropriate.

No. We have an open-door policy. However, the Commonwealth’s Attorney and his Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorneys are in Court nearly every day, so it is best to call ahead.
