GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Serves as a sworn law enforcement deputy of the
Sheriffs Office; specifically provides law enforcement and safety in the school system on
behalf of the Sheriff; performs all related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION: As a deputy sheriff assigned to the
Community Services Division of the Office, incumbent directs, supervises, and manages all
code enforcement and safety procedures of a School Resource Officer. The incumbent is
directly responsible in the chain of command to the Sergeant of the SRO/DARE. Section.

DIMENSIONS OF DUTY REQUIREMENTS:
• Extensive working knowledge of federal, state and local laws that may pertain to a given
assignment.
• Extensive working knowledge of Sheriffs Office policy, procedures and methods.
• A working knowledge of Washington County public schools parent/student handbook.
• Ability to work with administration, faculty, staff, and students in the school system by
providing a safe school environment.
• Ability to work with parents of students within the school system.
• Ability to observe and record events impressions, identities and other observations.
• Ability to distinguish hazardous and/or criminal activity in a school setting using acquired
training and experience to act appropriately.
• Ability to impartially exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties.
• Ability to take notes and to completely and accurately describe factual information
regarding an incident.
• Ability to compose routine correspondence.
• Ability to manage time and set schedules.
• Ability to successfully complete all required training.
• Ability to endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted by hostile individuals without
responding inappropriately.
• Ability to detect and collect evidence of criminal activity.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, coworkers,
other criminal justice personnel and the community.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of county,
state and federal government agencies.
• Ability to research information law, court decisions, methods, and techniques relevant to
the operations of the Sheriffs Office.
• Assists with school functions such as dances, ball games, etc.
• Ability to perform any other duties as assigned.
• Endorse and support the mission statement of the Sheriff’s Office.
• Serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of state and
county laws and ordinances relating to the criminal code; demonstrated ability to command
the respect of subordinates and co-workers; ability to deal firmly, fairly and courteously with
the public; ability to communicate effectively via voice, telephone, radio, intercom or in writing
with staff, school officials or the public; ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports;
demonstrate skill in the use of firearms; physical condition that permits the activities
necessary in, and inherent to law enforcement and the Community Services Division.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must be at least 21 years of age. Must
possess a high school diploma or GED-an associated degree from an accredited
community or junior college preferred; must be a citizen of the United States; have no
background or record of any criminal conviction; must be of exemplary ethical reputation;
must possess a valid Virginia operators license with no major convictions within the
preceding five year period; must be able to satisfactorily pass a thorough background
investigation; must be in a physical condition which does not limit, in any way, activities
necessary and/or inherent to law enforcement operations.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Completion of the required training leading to State
certification as a law enforcement officer by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
Completion of the required training leading to be certified as a School Resource Officer by
the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
