Office of Emergency Management
The Department of Emergency Management is responsible for coordinating emergency services activities within Washington County. A close relationship is maintained between the Department and the volunteer fire and rescue organizations who are assigned emergency response duties throughout the County. The Department is responsible for maintaining a County Emergency Operations Plan and a Hazardous Materials Response Plan. The Department is also the point of contact for the County’s Enhanced 9-1-1 (E-911) system.

The Washington County Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) has been revised as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia Emergency Services and Disaster Laws of 2000, as amended, Section 44-146.13 et seq. “ Wi-Fi calling is a great tool to use when you don’t have a strong cell signal. However, if you keep your Wi-Fi turned on at multiple locations be sure to update your address under the Wi-Fi calling settings on your phone. In the event of needing emergency services, this will ensure you reach the appropriate 911 center. For example: If you live in Tazewell County, Virginia and have Wi-Fi Calling set for your home address but you work in Washington County, Virginia and need to call 911 while at work and are connected to Wi-Fi, your phone will recognize your home address for Wi-Fi Calling and route the 911 call to the center in Tazewell County instead of Washington County. Not updating your location could result in a delay of emergency response because of the misrouting of your 911 call.”

Washington County has nine volunteer fire departments, of which two are fire and rescue combination, and four rescue squads located throughout the County. The department physically located the closest to your location will be the one to respond to an emergency in your area.
Flash flooding can occur anywhere but the most flood prone areas in Washington County are the Damascus and Mendota communities.
