Washington County Virginia will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection May 09, 2026

Event hours are 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Location: MXI Environmental Services 26319 Old Trail Head Road Abingdon, VA 24210

(Directions: Take Interstate 81 North to exit 22.  Turn left at the end of the ramp, turn left on Hillman Hwy, go 3/4 miles to Old Trail Head Road on left, go to end of road.  Directly behind Hapco American Flagpole.  State Route 879.

The County of Washington, Virginia is currently accepting proposals for insurance coverage for real and personal property of the Fire Service and Emergency Medical Service Providers in Washington County, Virginia, and for the persons acting as paid and volunteer personnel for such Providers.  Insurance coverage under consideration could include all or any of the following components: General Liability, Property, Portable Equipment, Vehicle, Crime, Umbrella Liability, Cyber Liability, and Workers Compensation.   The County may make awards to separate insurers for separate components of coverage.  A request for proposal package containing instructions, qualifications, and specifications may be obtained by contacting the Department of Budget & Finance at 1 Government Center Place, Suite A; Abingdon, Virginia 24210; or phone 276-525-1310.

4 PM Burning Law in Effect

February 15th – April 30th

Maximum fine of $500

Burning law in brief:

  1. Non burning until after 4:00 pm.  If the fire is within 300 feet of woodland, brushland, or field containing dry grass or other inflammable material.
  2. Fire must be attended at all times if the fire is within 150 feet of woodland or other dry fuel leading to woodland.
  3. No fuel may be added or fire started after midnight.
  4. Law applies to campfires, warming fires, brush piles, household trash, stumps, fields of dry grass and brush, or anything capapble of spreading a fire.

AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 58, ARTICLE II, DIVISION 3, SUBDIVISION II, SECTION 58-85 OF THE CODE OF THE COUNTY OF WASHINGTON, VIRGINIA, TO UPDATE FINANCIAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR THE PARTIAL EXEMPTION FROM TAXATION OF QUALIFIYING ELDERLY AND HANDICAPPED PERSONS

WHEREAS, Section 58.1-3210 of the Code of Virginia (1950, as amended) allows the local governing body, by ordinance, to provide for exemption of taxation of real estate and manufactured homes in such amount provided by Ordinance.

WHEREAS, the Washington County Code (2002, as amended), provides for such exemption, for which eligibility is determined based upon specific financial criteria; and

WHEREAS, such financial criteria require amendment from time to time to adjust for inflation, and the Commissioner of Revenue has recommended adjustment based on current economic conditions; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED, by the Board of Supervisors for Washington County, Virginia, after notice as public hearing, as required by law, and finding it in the best interest of the public health, safety, and welfare, the Code of the County of Washington (2002) shall be amended as set forth below subject to the following terms and conditions:

  1. That should any section of provision of this Ordinance be decided to be invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, such decision shall not affect the validity or constitutionality of any other section or provision of this ordinance or the Washington County Code.
  2. That the ordinance shall become effective immediately upon its enactment.
  3. Chapter 58, Subsection 58-85 is amended, as set forth below; underline and italic indicate language to be added; strikethrough indicates language to be deleted:
