Litter Crew Supervisor
TITLE: Deputy Sheriff, Litter Crew Supervisor
REPORTS TO: Animal/Litter Control Sergeant
General Statement of Duties: Manages the daily operation of the established County Litter Clean-up program. This program encompasses working with adult inmates, and adults assigned by the court to the program to perform community service and have been determined to safely provide litter pick up services for Washington County.
Distinguishing Features of the Position: As a deputy sheriff assigned to the Litter Control Division of the office, incumbent directs, supervises, and manages all adult inmates and adults assigned by the court to Litter Clean-up program in Washington County. The incumbent is directly responsible in the chain of command to the Animal/Litter Control Sargeant.
Dimensions of Duty Requirements:
- Responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Litter Clean-up program and coordinate work crew litter projects throughout the county.
- Established daily work schedules and established priorities of roads that would benefit the most from a litter work crew.
- Coordinates the schedules of citizens ordered to provide community service and inmates to conduct litter removal to provide meaningful benefit for all citizens.
- Operates a vehicle and equipment trailer to transport adult and inmate litter work crews to/from worksites along the state and county roadways in compliance with all highway safety laws and speed limits.
- Provides daily direction to litter work crews on site, complying with all Virginia State Labor & Industry worker safety laws and regulations to ensure safety.
- Reports offender/inmate problems and misbehavior a higher authority to ensure compliance with court orders.
- Maintains accurate records of the progress of individuals assigned to the litter work crew program and reports progress to the appropriate supervisor.
- Maintains milage records and vehicle maintenance reports.
- Responsible for acquiring all tools and safety equipment necessary to perform each litter crew task safely.
- Complete inventory reports and maintenance records of the department’s equipment and tools.
- Responsible for documenting all litter clean-up activities.
- Responsible for maintaining and submitting all work-related reporting forms in a timely and accurate manner.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of principle, practices, and techniques and related tools/equipment to accomplish the basic function of this position, including any safety and/or legal requirements. This may, not necessarily, include specialized skills. Ability to oversee adult inmates and adults assigned by the court. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, follow instructions, and complete work independently.
Minimum Education and Experience: Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a high school diploma or GED; must be citizen of the United States’ have no background or record of any criminal conviction; must be of exemplary ethical reputation; must possess a valid Virginia operators license with no major convictions within the preceding five year period’ must be able to satisfactorily pass a thorough background investigation; must be in physical condition which does not limit, in any way, activities necessary and/or inherent to law enforcement operations. The Sheriff may waive any of the aforementioned.
Additional Requirements: Completion of the required training leading to State certification as a law enforcement officer by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
