Deputy Sheriff GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Serves as a sworn law enforcement deputy of the Sheriff’s Office; specifically provides for the general public safety by enforcing all codes of the County and State on behalf of the Sheriff; performs all related work as required. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION: As s deputy Sheriff assigned to the Patrol Operation Division of the Office, incumbents direct, supervise, and manage the enforcement of all state and county criminal and traffic codes and ordinances as prescribed by Office policies, procedures, and directives. The incumbent is directly responsible in the chain of command to the Shift Sergeant. DIMENSIONS OF DUTY REQUIREMENTS: · Extensive working knowledge of federal, state and local laws that may pertain to a given assignment. · Extensive working knowledge of Sheriff’s Office policy, procedures, and methods. · Ability to observe and mentally record events, impressions, identities, and other observations. · Ability to distinguish hazardous and/or criminal activity by sight and sound. · Ability to impartially exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties. · Ability to safely transport arrestees in custody. · Ability to communicate effectively using clear, proper spoken and written English with staff, the public, a and other public safety agencies. · Ability to take notes and to completely and accurately describe factual information regarding an incident. · Ability to compose routine correspondence. · Ability to manage time and schedules. · Ability to successfully complete all required training. · Ability to endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted by hostile individuals, without responding inappropriately. · Ability to detect and collect evidence of criminal activity. · Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of county, state, and federal government agencies. · Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle during clear and in climate weather conditions, and in law enforcement related emergencies· Ability to make personal contact with the possibility of exposure to body fluids, waste, and/or deceased subjects. · Ability to perform searches of persons, vehicles, buildings, areas, and articles by feeling, observing, hearing, and smelling. · Ability to research information, law court decision, methods, and techniques relevant to the operations of the Sheriff’s Office. · Ability to lift, carry, and/or drag heavy objects, with a minimum weight of 120 lbs., such as victims, or restraint subjects. · Ability to delegate any of the above duties to subordinates. · Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Sheriff. · Endorse and support the mission statement of the Sheriff’s Office. · Serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of state and county laws and ordinances relating to the criminal code; extensive knowledge of law enforcement policy and procedure; demonstrated ability to command the respect of subordinates ability to deal firmly, fairly, and courteously with the public; ability to communicate effectively via voice, telephone, radio, intercom, or in writing with staff, or the public; ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports; demonstrated skill in the use of firearms, physical condition that permits the activities necessary in, and inherent to law enforcement. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a high school diploma or GED, a current law enforcement certification from a DCJS accredited law enforcement academy, an associate’s degree from a accredited community or junior college preferred; must be a citizen of the United States; have no background or record of any criminal conviction; must be of exemplary ethical reputation; must possess a valid Virginia operators license with no major convictions within the preceding five-year period; must be able to satisfactorily pass a through background investigation; must be in a physical condition which does not limit, in any way, activities necessary and /or inherent to law enforcement operations. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have completed the required state law enforcement certification by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
