The County Department of Recreation works enthusiastically year-round hosting a variety of youth and adult recreational opportunities. These include sports clinics, youth sports leagues, road races, summer day camps, classes and more. This department is responsible for the maintenance of County athletic fields and parks and also manages reservations for picnic shelters and pool events. We welcome and encourage your participation!

Youth Programs

Unless otherwise noted, registration for youth programs with be at the school’s location of the program. Date and time will be set by the Recreation Department and published online as well as in the Programs Brochure.  Payment for youth programs is due at the time of registration.  If you can not attend the scheduled registration, please contact Katie Hall at 276-525-1387.

 

The Department of Recreation does not sponsor youth baseball or softball leagues directly, but does coordinate with our local volunteer organizations. All baseball and softball programs are sanctioned through Little League Baseball, Inc., depending on location. The basketball programs operated by the Department of Recreation are the youth basketball  in the Glade Spring/Meadowview area. We offer Youth Basketball for children in 1st/2nd grades, Junior League Basketball for children in 3rd/4th/5th grades, and Middle School Basketball for youth in 6th/7th/8th grades.  Our basketball season typically runs November – February, depending on age group.  For more information, please contact the Department of Recreation at 276-525-1387 or 276-525-1385.

At this time, the Department of Recreation does not offer any youth volleyball programs.

The Department of Recreation proudly partners with National Alliance for Youth Sports to offer Ready, Set, Run! in the elementary schools of Washington County!

Ready, Set, Run! is a character-building running program that trains kids ages 8-13 to participate in a 5k run. This curriculum-based program equips kids with the physical training and goal-setting mentality needed to accomplish their running goals. Issues like enhancing confidence and self-esteem, respecting authority, dealing with peer pressure and fueling their bodies through proper nutrition are covered during the 12-week session. Above all, kids have a blast seeing what they are capable of achieving!

Childcare Programs

Summer Play Days operates approximately 6 weeks during the summer at various Washington County elementary and middle schools.  Hours of operation are 7:30am – 5:45pm.  Rates are $50 per week ($10 per day) with some field trips at an additional fee.  Each day we provide structured activities such as sports, arts and crafts, field trips, swimming, and lots of exciting visits from various outside organizations!

After School Care is currently only available at Abingdon Elementary School.

Our after school care operates immediately following the school day until 5:45pm, at your child’s school.  We offer snack time, homework time, crafts, organized games, movies, free play, and more! Fees are $30 per week/$6 per day.

Adult Programs

Unless noted otherwise, all adults other programs can be registered for by contacting Katie Hall at 276-525-1387. Registration deadlines with be set by the Recreation Department and published in the Programs Brochure.  Payment for adults other programs can be mailed or delivered to the Recreation Department.

League is open to anyone age 16 and up (under 18 does require parents/guardians signature.)  Roster must consist of at least 8 players, but no more than 20.  At least 4 of the players must be female.  Kickball ‘season’ will consist of 6-8 games, followed by a double elimination tournament.  Length of season and dates of tournament will be determined by the number of teams registered. Registration fee is $250 per team, for up to 15 players.  Additional players will be $20.00 per person.

Games will be played at 6:30, 7:30 or 8:30 (minimal 8:30 games,) on Mondays and Thursdays, at Beaverdam Creek Park in Damascus or Leo Sholes Park in Glade Spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out what programs are offered by the Department of Recreation?

The Department of Recreation distributes a brochure quarterly through all schools in the county. Press releases are published in local newspapers and on local cable television to announce program offerings.

Is there a fee for participating in County sponsored programs and how much is that fee?

Fees vary depending on the program. All fees collected from program participants are deposited into the County General Fund. Fees for children\’s programs range from $6.00 to $25.00 per program. Fees for adult programs range from $10.00 to $50.00 per program.

Are there scholarships available for citizens unable to afford registration fees?

Yes. Please contact the Department of Recreation for details.

Is Washington County responsible for the administration of youth sports activities?

The only youth sport programs that are directly operated by the Department of Recreation are the recreational youth basketball program in the Glade Spring / Meadowview area and the youth volleyball program in the Abingdon/Glade Spring/Meadowview area. All areas in Washington County are served by volunteer organizations which provide quality youth sports activities. All baseball and softball programs are sanctioned through Little League Baseball, Inc. Other sports available depending on location include soccer, football, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, and dance teams. Who is responsible for the operation and maintenance of recreational facilities in Washington County?

Recreational facilities are maintained by various groups within the County.The Harry Coomes Recreational Center is operated by the Town of Abingdon. The contact number is (276) 623-5279.The Virginia Creeper Trail is maintained by the Town of Abingdon. The Town of Damascus, volunteer organizations, and the National Forest Service.Washington County Park is operated by the Washington County Park Authority. The contact numbers are (276) 676-6215 or (276) 628-9677.Whitaker Hollow Park is maintained by the Washington County Recreation Department.Sugar Hollow Park is operated and maintained by the City of Bristol, VA Parks and Recreation Department. Does Washington County have a comprehensive plan for parks and recreation?

In 2000, Washington County entered into contract with Barge, Waggoner, Sumner, and Cannon of Knoxville, Tennessee for the completion of a recreational needs assessment study for the County. The study was completed in the fall of 2000. Washington County holds great potential for future development of a variety of recreational facilities, trails, and greenways.
