What is a comprehensive plan?

A comprehensive plan is Washington County’s blueprint for the future.  Once adopted, it may be used as a guide for elected and public officials and provide the framework for evaluating future land use and public investment proposals.  Although it is required by the Code of Virginia, the comprehensive plan can be so much more to the county!  Preparation of the Plan gives the public the chance to work with county leaders and staff to create a vision for development.

The comprehensive plan may address some of the following issues: land use, transportation, parks and recreation, natural and cultural resources, infrastructure (water and sewer), housing and economic development.  Who is involved? It takes all of us to create a meaningful plan; you, your neighbors, members of the business community, and elected officials.  Community input is vital to the creation of the plan. Your thoughts, ideas and suggestions are critical! How can I get involved?  Make plans to attend a community meeting, take an online survey or host a Meeting-in-a-Box.Take a survey here.

Youth Activities

Washington County is in the process of updating the twenty year comprehensive plan and all members of the community— citizens, elected and appointed officials, people involved in designing and building developments and our YOUTH – can play a meaningful part in the process!  We are calling the process “PLAN•Washington County”.

Today’s children will inherit the communities that we plan and it is in our best interest to consult with them on what they hope the future will look like! There are several ways for young people to be involved in the process:

1. Attend a community meeting with Mom & Dad! A “Kid’s Table” will be provided at each community meeting.

2. Participate in the “Youth Contest”.

3. Go on a “Plan•Washington County” Scavenger Hunt!
